Binham Abbey Walls I love old walls. They add a great depth of character to a landscape and are always worth checking, because they often support a range of plants. This wall at Binham Abbey was draped with the delicate, spidery little fern Maidenhair Spleenwort and with Pellitory-of-the-Wall; you could not have a better rockery! Both species are almost confined to old walls, although Pellitory-of-the-Wall, a close relative of the Stinging Nettle, is also found in pavement cracks. The pellitorys get their name, incidentally, from the Greek for fire (pur), as the roots have a hot, pungent taste. Binham, Norfolk, 27 June |
